Backyard Spirituality
Backyards are an excellent place for some quiet time, rest and recovery and encounters with the infinite.
I was just standing out in the backyard, enjoying the cool breeze, the silence, the dark sky, the enormous trees that the Forest Lake developers nicely left in the back corner of my yard – feeling at peace and one with the universe.
Wherever I’ve lived, the garden has been a big part of my spiritual life. To be an effective spiritual sanctuary for me, the garden is preferably overgrown, has mysterious rustling sounds, a frog somewhere and copious leaf litter under the feet. It’s also good if the moon is bright, the night quiet, the breeze gentle and cool and the rest of the house is asleep. Sometimes I might sip a beer, lie on the ground or just wonder around looking for possums.
Sometimes my thoughts will meander over the last few days, maybe head towards the next day or two or run off on some tangential hypothetical situation. Other times, I might imagine plots from books and movies. Sometimes I don’t think about anything at all.
Whatever I do, I can’t imagine what life would be like without a sanctuary: a safe place to retreat to no matter how busy life is, where there is stillness and one can be immersed in the sense of the infinite universe extending from that thin layer of air above our heads into an eternity of wonder and mystery.
