Wow – I’m just listening to part 2 of the Religion Report ‘Science Fatwah’ which interviews Sam Harris) . He has a lot to say about moderate religious’ failure to confront fundamentalism. I can see why there are so many frustrated atheists out there when you put it in the context of the Christian right in America. Sam claims that by having a moderate faith we are supporting those who have an extreme faith and helping perpetuate the violent outcomes of religious fundamentalism. He also falls into the trap that Br William describes in his Teapot orbits pluto post. But then again he kind of argues against this by telling us moderate Christians to wake up and look at what the mainstream of the faith around us really believes (claiming that moderate Christians are deceiving themselves by not recognising that they are worshiping alongside a mainstream of fundamentalists in their faith)

So he cleverly uses the fundamentalist terrorist angle to get at all forms of religion by way of a kind of encouraging craziness by proxy.
