Cappadocians
Here is my recent paper on the Cappadocian trinity given at St Francis College as part of the triune God subject.
The executive summary is that the cappadocians came up with the concept of our person / identity / being as separate to our substance / nature. They emphasised relationships as that which defines who we are and also that which gives God’s persons their identity. They were big on koinonia which is a special word to describe the most intimate way for persons to relate (and the way God’s persons relate).
There are some photos of modern Cappadocia here – some amazing cave cities.
This topic challenged me in the way I think about others and how I relate to others. The Cappadocians challenge us to see each each human person as made in the image of God. They find their religion in uniting with koinia with the Spirit and with other human beings in the Spirit. They saw sin as that which treats people according to their human nature – as objects – and not honoring the sacred person at the heart of each person.
