Religion Report – A Jesuit Anniversary
One thing that struck me from this show:
Well you won’t always find us going with what’s fashionable, because that’s our job; we have to really try to discern a vision and try to read the signs of the times and the scriptures, and see the way in which we’re called. Our vocation is from God as we understand it, it’s not exactly a vocation from the church. Certainly it’s a vocation to serve the church, but it does seem to put us at odds at times, but I would hope that it’s deeply loyal.
I’m not sure if the jesuits were the first to have this attitude towards the church but it’s something I’ve read about in more general books about religious orders – that they are often in the role of challenging the church and criticising the church. So they play a vital part in renewal and setting the direction of the church.
