Deus Caritas Est
This is really worth a listen – The religion report discusses the new pope’s first encyclical – like his papal newsletter to the church. He’s basically freaked everyone out by writing about compassion and love. We were expecting a conservative right-wing dude but instead we’ve got this…
The Religion Report: 1 February 2006 – BENEDICT GENIUS EST
Joseph Ratzinger is a famous theologian, but he resists the opportunity to give a turgid theology lesson. This is a pastoral encyclical and it wears its learning lightly. The style is relaxed and easy to understand, even humorous in places. There are no syllogisms, no talk about essences or norms, no endless footnotes quoting his papal predecessors. In short, it’s nothing like an encyclical by Pope John Paul II. Above all, this is emphatically not an encyclical about sex, and not a papal fatwah. There is no mention of procreation or contraception or Humanae Vitae or Pope John Paul’s Theology of the Body.
The two central arguments are truly astonishing: that God loves us with eros – that the Bible is a love story: ‘The universal principle of creation – the logos, primordial reason – is at the same time a lover with all the passion of a true love.’ And that in the final wash-up (this is the second argument) because God’s love is a forgiving love, God’s love triumphs over God’s justice. What a blessed relief!

So much for the “Caretaker Pope”.
