Anointing of David
Moving right along.
Today’s readings are the anointing of David. The Gospel reading is when Jesus uses David as an example of breaking conventional Jewish law – what i’ve always been taught is that Jesus was concerned with the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law – as was David it seems. Jesus has no qualms equating himself with David – the greatest king of Israels history.
USCCB – (NAB) – January 17, 2006
The LORD said, “There: anoint him, for this is he!” Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and from that day on, the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.
I like it how the spirit rushes upon David. What does that mean? I suppose he was a spirited bloke.
Perhaps God was desperate to get going with David after Saul’s decline. Maybe that reveals something about that time – that Saul as a leader was holding an oppresive blanket of apathy over the nation. And perhaps this was true of Jesus’ time as well.

What I like about David is that in my reading of the Bible (which is nowhere near authoritative) he is one of the few who tells what it felt like to be him, how he felt relating to God and that whole process of gladness, repentence and misery, forgiveness, etc. Though Jesus had a couple of emotional moments and quotes, we don’t have any of his writings, if indeed he wrote any. it’s only people like David in the psalms and maybe Job and Jonah (though the books about the latter 2 only describe their conversations with God, not their inner feelings) who tell how they feel and the emotions and physical reactions they go through.
