Drowning in Poverty
I have been listening to John Safran (Sunday Night Safran) a bit lately (on podcast) and Father Bob has been spruking his website. So I checked it out for myself. I liked this article (he’s a bit lazy like me and just links to other articles with a short comentary of his own)
“When the Louisiana National Guard ordered troops to shoot to kill, it was declaring war on its own. But not all of its own. They weren’t attacking the staff and guests of the Hyatt Hotel who were evacuated ahead of the homeless.
And they weren’t attacking the city’s wealthier, mostly white citizens who live on higher ground and who drove to safety in their own cars.
No, those in the firing line were those who had the least. The poor, largely black population that had so given up on the rest of the country they had turned to looting and rioting.
Make no mistake – despite what conservative apologists will have you believe, inequality and greed have killed more people than Hurricane Katrina ever could.
