Filled
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
Any followers of world news would dispute this but perhaps if you were up early this morning in suburban Brisbane, walking the dog you could believe it.
But for those who are not so lucky, you’re not forgotten
18Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
20Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield.
I don’t think the love God has for us is always obvious. It is expressed in ways we don’t understand through a soul that we have enough trouble trying to define.
4For the word of the LORD is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
Perhaps i’m taking this a bit out of context but the way I see it is that we do the work of God through our faith. We have faith that God is working love in the world through us and others and we are faithful to God – that he hasn’t abandoned us, that he is present with us, that our spirit can find him in any situation. So we need to be filled with love for the world and people – and for justice and for healing – but it’s a love that comes from God through our spirit.
I’m now adding another task to our lenten shopping list. We have repented of our sins and tried to think of things that we have left undone. How about this for an idea – we need to sit still, meditate and be filled with the spirit of God – that is filled with the love for the world that is supposed to spill out of us. Perhaps we can say that lent is about recharging our batteries, letting God renew our spirit. There are forms of meditation that are about emptying ourselves to be filled with God. Perhaps that is goal of lent afterall.
